Job Description
CBS Sports is seeking an Associate Editorial Researcher skilled at identifying news and discovering emerging storylines; gathering and organizing articles and other sources for background, potential human-interest stories; and evaluating and summarizing key points of storylines or commentaries to enhance and support the coverage across CBS Sports platforms, with a particular focus on sports content that is sensitive to, reflective of, and drives progress forward on issues related to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disabilities, and other cultural touch points.
The Associate Editorial Researcher will use deep sports knowledge, sound news judgment, and an insatiable curiosity to provide biographical, editorial, thematic and other information to support storytelling that is timely, relevant, and innovative. The Associate Editorial Researcher will help to discover developing subjects and angles to support coverage across CBS Sports platforms, including studio and game broadcasts, digital presentations, and social media. The Associate Editorial Researcher should display a passion and affinity for reacting to and tracking developing stories across multiple sports, with an emphasis on those at the core of our CBS Sports coverage including but not limited to NFL, college football and basketball, soccer, golf.
RESPONSIBILITIES: - Use deep sports knowledge along with strong research techniques to identify and communicate key storylines related to games, teams, and sports covered on CBS Sports productions, as well as breaking news across multiple sports.
- Create and deliver informational packets that include news and information about our games; storylines ranging from matchups to profiles to features to columns; and ideas for on-screen elements.
- Conduct a variety of searches using databases, school/team websites, social media, CBS Sports branded and other media outlets, and other sources to support storytelling and coverage for all platforms
- Monitor news feeds, including searching social & other media outlets, and work with CBS Sports reporters and other editorial staff to gather and evaluate relevant news and information.
- Initiate and maintain files of major news stories, trends and developing themes, as well as story ideas, and other relevant information about the sports, conferences, teams, coaches and players covered on CBS Sports platforms
- Prepare general background/research material for other entities as needed.
- Be a catalyst for brainstorming, news gathering, and sharing content that is sensitive to, reflective of, and driven to making progress on issues in sports related to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disabilities, and other cultural touch points.
- Write, edit and review scripts and graphics for accuracy, style and editorial value. This includes skills at writing to video and for broadcast news (ex. writing for voice over and packages).
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS - Minimum 1 year of relevant educational or work experience in journalism, communications, or production related area.
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, or equivalent educational or work experience
- Experience writing or reporting around live events or other deadline-driven timelines, is a plus
- Must possess strong research skills and editorial judgment.
- Excellent working knowledge of and interest in multiple sports, especially NFL, college football and college basketball, golf, soccer
- Must be able to work independently while also thriving in a team-oriented environment
- Must demonstrate ability and desire to work in a fast-paced environment under deadline, to prioritize assignments and ensure accuracy
- Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, proven ability to multitask, and demonstrate a keen attention to detail.
- Must have experience with a variety of approaches to research and newsgathering, including employing best practices for urgent and effective use of social media.
- Must demonstrate ability to communicate ideas effectively and efficiently.
- Must be available to work in office multiple days per week, and to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Hiring Salary Range: $48,800.00 - 53,800.00.
The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
