Start Date: January 2026*

About Wilmington College:

Wilmington College (WC) is a private, career-oriented liberal arts institution in southwest Ohio, founded in the Quaker tradition and affiliated with the Religious Society of Friends. Our mission emphasizes respect for all persons, social justice, and experiential learning, values that shape both our academic programs and our engagement with the wider community. The College offers a traditional residential campus experience alongside online programs and prison education opportunities.

Located in Wilmington, Ohio, WC combines the charm of a welcoming small town, known for its local restaurants, community festivals, and claim as the birthplace of the banana split, with easy access to Dayton, Columbus, and Cincinnati.

Job Description:

The Social Sciences Academic Area at Wilmington College invites applications for a full-time (9-month), non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice to begin in January 2026.

We seek a practitioner-scholar with significant applied experience in policing, courts, and/or corrections who can bring real-world insights into the classroom and prepare students for professional roles in the justice system. The successful candidate will have the ability to translate lived professional practice into engaging, practice-oriented teaching and student mentorship.

The teaching load is 3-3, with primary responsibility for undergraduate courses in applied criminal justice, such as policing, corrections, courts, criminal law and procedure, and community-based justice. Because the program already includes a sociological and theoretical emphasis, candidates with direct professional experience are strongly preferred.

Additional responsibilities include mentoring students pursuing careers in law enforcement, corrections, courts, or community justice; contributing to service within the College, community, and profession; and supporting the College’s mission of preparing graduates for lives of service and success.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earned J.D., Master’s, or Doctoral degree in criminal justice, criminology, or a closely related field with at least 18 graduate semester hours in criminal justice or criminology by time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated potential for effectively teaching applied undergraduate criminal justice courses (e.g., policing, courts, corrections, criminal law/procedure).
  • Commitment to engaging with best practices in instruction, pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum development.
  • Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
  • Ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within the campus community.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Substantial professional experience in criminal justice practice (e.g., policing, courts, or corrections).
  • Evidence of successful college/university-level teaching.
  • Commitment to respect for all persons, social justice, and inclusion.
  • Experience building partnerships with law enforcement, legal, and social justice organizations/communities.
  • Ability to contribute to the scholarship of practice or applied research in criminal justice.

Required Documents to Attach:

Applicants should submit the following documents: (1) a cover letter with personal statement regarding teaching goals (inclusive of both strengths and challenges); (2) a current curriculum vitae; (3) one sample syllabi with recent course evaluation if available; (4) three references that include name, address, title, telephone number, and email addresses; and (5) copies of official transcripts of all graduate coursework.

A review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Wilmington College is an equal opportunity employer and will not discriminate unlawfully in employment matters based on race, religion, gender, color, ancestry, national origin, age, disability or any other category protected by law. EOE. WC offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package for full time positions including group medical, dental, vision, life and disability, TIAA-CREF, tuition remission, paid vacation, and holidays.
