POSITION SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief/Captain, the Firefighter will uphold the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians (the Tribe) Fire Department’s stated mission statement, core values, and goals. Firefighters are required to perform skilled emergency service work including fire suppression, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and non-emergency duties such as fuel reduction, fire prevention, public assistance and education. Firefighters must be able work for extended periods of time at emergency incidents that may involve physical exertion often under adverse environmental conditions. This position is an arduous position and subject to medical screening, physical fitness training, and random drug testing. This job description is for the entry-level and seasonal classifications.
This position may or may not be engaged in firefighting activities, but will be directly working under supervision in training, fuels reduction projects, team building, outdoor recreation management, and various projects that require basic use of a variety of firefighting tools and techniques.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Supervision is received from the Fire Chief or their designee. Work is inspected in process and upon completion. A Firefighter is responsible for their personal actions and conduct. Evaluations are provided on a regular schedule and are based on individual performance as well as their interactions with other Company and Tribal Fire members.
PHYSICAL
The physical demands of the position are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires sitting, twisting and reaching for equipment; performing various tasks that require standing, walking, bending, stooping, squatting, climbing, kneeling, simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation, performs physical activities of a strenuous nature; must see and hear with sufficient acuity; may lift heavy objects, especially when responding to or operating at emergency situations or incidents.
ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work environments described are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job, but is not limited to the following: working indoors and outdoors; traveling in a vehicle to emergency situations or other calls for service at any time of day; may be exposed to atmospheres that may be immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) including dust, noise, smoke, fumes, gases, oil, grease, constant equipment vibration, machinery with moving parts, moving objects and other vehicles, wet and slippery surfaces; working unusual and prolonged schedules during emergencies in all weather conditions including extreme temperatures.

DRUG SCREEN
Shingle Springs Rancheria requires the successful completion of a drug screening of all potential Tribal employees prior to being hired. The Tribe recognizes that the State of California has legalized the use of marijuana. The Tribe is located on federally owned trust land and complies with federal laws. Therefore, marijuana use is prohibited, and all drug tests will include a screening for THC.
Shingle Springs Rancheria recognizes a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy and employees will be required to sign a Consent to Drug and/or Alcohol Testing. Employees may be selected for alcohol / drug testing upon reasonable suspicion, and upon any/all accidents.
BACKGROUND CHECK
Candidates for this position will be subject to criminal and character background checks and fingerprinting prior to being hired. Verification of previous employment and education will also be conducted after the interview if an offer of employment is being considered.

INDIAN PREFERENCE
Preference in hiring is given to the most qualified applicant. However, when candidates for an open position are determine to be equally qualified, Native American candidates will have preference for hiring purposes. This means that if the qualifications of the best candidates are comparable, the Native American candidate is given preference. The following order of preference shall be adhered to when hiring: (1) Members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians members; (2) Spouses or domestic partners (certified through Tribal Court or the State of California) of members of Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; 3) Parents of children of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians; 4) All other documented Native Americans; 5) All other applicants in accordance with Title 25, U.S. Code, Section 472 and 473. Applicants claiming Indian preference must submit verification of Indian eligibility.
