POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief/Captain, the Firefighter will uphold the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians (the Tribe) Fire Department’s stated mission statement, core values, and goals. Firefighters are required to perform skilled emergency service work including fire suppression, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and non-emergency duties such as fuel reduction, fire prevention, public assistance and education. Firefighters must be able work for extended periods of time at emergency incidents that may involve physical exertion often under adverse environmental conditions. This position is an arduous position and subject to medical screening, physical fitness training, and random drug testing. This job description is for the entry-level and seasonal classifications.

This position may or may not be engaged in firefighting activities, but will be directly working under supervision in training, fuels reduction projects, team building, outdoor recreation management, and various projects that require basic use of a variety of firefighting tools and techniques.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Participates in station, apparatus, and equipment maintenance and training activities.
  2. Operates and drives fire department vehicles and apparatus.
  3. Communicates and establishes positive working relationships with the general public in order to deliver service of all types including emergency response, business inspections, participating in school programs, answering questions, and assessing customer needs.
  4. Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service as a member of a fire company or fire crew.
  5. Serves as a skilled crewmember on an engine or hand crew.
  6. Serves as a skilled wildland firefighter on an organized crew during prescribed burns, monitoring and controlling the fire and collecting data on fire weather and fire behavior.
  7. Performs basic fire line activities such as line construction, hose layout, operations of pumps and accessories, lopping and scattering of fuels using hand tools.
  8. Holds, patrols, monitors, and mops-up in wildland fire operations.
  9. Performs assigned project work such as fuel inventory and hazard fuel reduction projects.
  10. Independently or with one or two other crewmembers may be assigned to carry out specialized assignments such as tree falling, backfire and burnout operations, mobile and stationary attack, construction of helispots, and specialized assignments with allied agencies.
  11. Assists in fire suppression activities including operating electric generators, ventilation fans, deploying and connecting hose lines; holding nozzles and directing water streams; raising and climbing ladders; using portable fire extinguishers, axes, bars, hooks, ropes, power-driven tools, and other equipment; use of salvage covers to prevent water damage; overhauling and cleaning up after a fire.
  12. Dons and works in personal protective equipment including wildland gear, structural gear, and self-contained breathing apparatus.
  13. Upon return to the fire station, cleans and services apparatus and equipment, testing and ensuring that they are available for emergency response.
  14. Administers first aid and operates various emergency medical devices.
  15. Performs rescue operations of persons in life and non-life threatening situations.
  16. Properly uses fire department communication equipment.
  17. Participates in fire drills and training exercises.
  18. Uses hand tools such as axes, shovels, Pulaski’s, McLeod’s, and power tools including chainsaws, to build fire line and extinguish burning materials as well as to maintain firefighting tools and equipment.
  19. Becomes familiar with Tribal, local, and area streets, fire hydrants, building occupancies and contents.
  20. Operates an office computer and a variety of word processing and software applications.
  21. Performs to completion all other related and assigned work and tasks as required.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Supervision is received from the Fire Chief or their designee. Work is inspected in process and upon completion. A Firefighter is responsible for their personal actions and conduct. Evaluations are provided on a regular schedule and are based on individual performance as well as their interactions with other Company and Tribal Fire members.

PHYSICAL

The physical demands of the position are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires sitting, twisting and reaching for equipment; performing various tasks that require standing, walking, bending, stooping, squatting, climbing, kneeling, simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation, performs physical activities of a strenuous nature; must see and hear with sufficient acuity; may lift heavy objects, especially when responding to or operating at emergency situations or incidents.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work environments described are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of this job, but is not limited to the following: working indoors and outdoors; traveling in a vehicle to emergency situations or other calls for service at any time of day; may be exposed to atmospheres that may be immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) including dust, noise, smoke, fumes, gases, oil, grease, constant equipment vibration, machinery with moving parts, moving objects and other vehicles, wet and slippery surfaces; working unusual and prolonged schedules during emergencies in all weather conditions including extreme temperatures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Must possess high school diploma or equivalent.
  3. Must possess or obtain S190 and S130 certification within 30 days from the date of hire.
  4. Must be able to work effectively under supervision and within a team structure as a significant element of the position.
  5. Effective communication skills are needed in order to work safely and be successful in the position.
  6. The Firefighter should be self-motivated.
  7. Ability to complete work assigned in an effective, efficient, and safe manner.
  8. Must possess the ability to exercise independent judgment.
  9. Must be capable of performing duties during various emergency operations.
  10. Wildland training from an accredited agency or organization, Incident Command System, or a Fire Science Certificate from a regionally accredited college or university is highly desirable.
  11. Any combination of the following: successful work experience history involving significant public contact with customer service responsibilities, course work in fire science, experience as a paid or volunteer Firefighter, or successful completion of a Fire Training Academy.
  12. Possession of, or ability to possess, an Emergency First Responder Certificate.
  13. Possession of, or ability to possess an Emergency Medical Technician I Certificate recognized by El Dorado County Emergency Medical Services Agency. Note: Other recognized EMT 1 certificates will be reviewed.
  14. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver License Class “C” with a Firefighter endorsement.
  15. Within 30 days of employment, incumbent must pass a standardized Arduous Work Capacity Pack Test, consisting of a 3-mile hike carrying a 45-pound pack completed in less than 45 minutes.
  16. Knowledge of modern firefighting methods and fire prevention practices.
  17. Knowledge and ability to safely operate and care for fire apparatus, fire equipment, tools, devices, and facilities.
  18. Knowledge of emergency medical aid procedures.
  19. Knowledge of the Uniform Fire Code and the procedures involved in fire prevention inspections.
  20. Knowledge of wildland fire control methods including suppression tactics, methods and procedures.
  21. Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and skills required in the use of wildland firefighting tools, radios, pumps and hoses, and chainsaws sufficient to perform routinely assigned fire suppression and prescribed fire assignments in various types of fuels and under a variety of weather and terrain conditions.
  22. Knowledge of wildland fire behavior, fire weather, wildland fire hazards, accepted ground and aviation wildland fire safety practices and procedures to prevent injury and loss of life.
  23. Ability to observe safety principles and work in a safe manner.
  24. Ability to maintain physical fitness and to engage in moderate to arduous physical activity and work long hours during emergency situations.
  25. Ability to learn the operation of motorized firefighting equipment.
  26. Ability to function effectively at emergency incidents.
  27. Ability to work at heights greater than ten feet and in confined spaces.
  28. Ability to learn a variety of methods and tasks related to firefighting and fire prevention.
  29. Ability to communicate as well as understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  30. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
  31. Must demonstrate proficiency in the English language.

DRUG SCREEN

Shingle Springs Rancheria requires the successful completion of a drug screening of all potential Tribal employees prior to being hired. The Tribe recognizes that the State of California has legalized the use of marijuana. The Tribe is located on federally owned trust land and complies with federal laws. Therefore, marijuana use is prohibited, and all drug tests will include a screening for THC.

 

Shingle Springs Rancheria recognizes a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy and employees will be required to sign a Consent to Drug and/or Alcohol Testing. Employees may be selected for alcohol / drug testing upon reasonable suspicion, and upon any/all accidents.

Candidates for this position will be subject to criminal and character background checks and fingerprinting prior to being hired. Verification of previous employment and education will also be conducted after the interview if an offer of employment is being considered.
