The department serves as MaineHealth’s primary legal services provider, with the exception of certain designated matters which are delegated to outside counsel. The team regularly does research and drafting, advising and strategy, and collaborates with all departments across the system. While health law is encountered on a daily basis, other areas of law encountered with some frequency include: administrative law, commercial transactions, employment and labor, tort/malpractice/litigation, family law, technology/security/privacy, intellectual property, real estate and planning, probate, environmental law, municipal law, and tax law. Occasional opportunities for attendance at hearings, mediations, depositions, trial, etc. may arise. More focused research projects spanning the length of the placement are common.
