The Outreach Phlebotomy Technician at Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital provides essential phlebotomy services to geriatric patients in nursing homes and rehabilitation facilities while adhering to clinical safety procedures. This role involves performing blood collections, processing specimens, and ensuring accurate patient information, all while maintaining excellent patient care and comfort. Ideal candidates will have phlebotomy experience, certifications, and flexibility in scheduling as they travel within designated areas to provide timely medical services.

As a Phlebotomy Technician, you will travel to nursing homes and rehabs within a specific area, including 12 on the east side, 14 on the west and 2 on the south. Many patients often find needles and the idea of having their blood drawn frightening, so you can help them feel at ease while obtaining all the required specimens. At Cleveland Clinic, you can also explore advanced positions, such as Lead Phlebotomist, Team Lead, Supervisor and Manager.

A caregiver in this position works days from 4:00AM – 12:30PM or 5:00AM – 1:00PM, with every other weekend and occasional holiday requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Perform blood collection for extended care clients and provide service to their residents, (primarily geriatric). 
  • Perform specimen processing and send-out tasks, such as accessioning and packaging for transport.
  • Follow proper protocol when collecting samples, such as introducing yourself, verifying patient identity, collecting specimens for all tests listed on the requisition, clarifying tests, labeling specimens, transporting and centrifuging.
  • Provide STAT, scheduled and routine orders.
  • Ensure all current demographic and insurance information is obtained and verified.
  • Check appropriate paperwork for each test, patient and/or client.
  • Complete and submit appropriate administrative paperwork, such as time and mileage reports.
  • Follow proper laboratory safety procedures.
  • Be flexible to work a varied schedule as required, including early morning and afternoon shifts, and travel to patient locations.
  • Carry an on-call pager on assigned weekdays and every other weekend during the hours of 4AM – midnight, answer the pager within 15-30 minutes, arrive at the home within an hour, collect stat draws and have the specimen back to the lab within 2 hours from the time receipt of call.
  • Adhere to HIPAA guidelines.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High School Diploma or GED 
  • One year of current Phlebotomy experience 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire 
  • A current, Valid Driver’s License (VDL) and personal liability insurance coverage with the limits of $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident on bodily injury and $100,000 in property liability damage 
  • Clean criminal history 
  • Experience and proficiency in blood collection from all patients
  • Experience in handling and transporting laboratory specimens, laboratory safety, medical terminology and laboratory waste management 
  • Working knowledge of clinical laboratory and tests performed 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Graduation certificate from a formal accredited Phlebotomy Program 
  • ASCP Phlebotomy Certification 
  • Two years of current Phlebotomy experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent standing and walking
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate blood drawing equipment and make measurements
  • Visual acuity including the ability to distinguish colors
  • Lifting objects up to 10 pounds
  • Occasionally carrying objects up to 20 pounds
  • Finger dexterity and eye hand coordination
  • Working irregular hours including On-call hours
  • Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions
  • Pushing and pulling heavy objects
  • Reaching, bending, stooping and handling objects with hands and/or fingers

  • Follow standard precautions using personal protective equipment
