Position Title: Science Communication Intern

Department: Education                       

Reports to: Director of Volunteer Programs and Intern Liaison

FLSA Status: Non-exempt                             

Job Status: Intern

Job Purpose: Our Internship Program will provide participants with a semester long (12 weeks) opportunity to expand their knowledge, learn by working alongside professionals in their intended fields, and provide hands-on learning to teach skills they could not obtain in a classroom. 

Internships at Zoo Atlanta are designed to provide training and professional work experience that will aid their professional goals. Zoo Atlanta agrees to provide interns: skills, training, and support material needed for designated service areas; opportunities to develop personal connections to professionals in their field of interest; resume building opportunities; and a chance to make a difference for endangered species and conservation issues in a fun and meaningful environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Attend required professional development and training sessions offered  
  • Participate in department-specific projects  
  • Present on a topic of choosing at the conclusion of the Internship 
  • Attend and be an active participant in weekly one-on-one meetings with Intern Liaison 
  • Maintain daily timecard record  
  • Provide and receive feedback on job performance
  • Assist in the implementation of visitor studies and program evaluations by collecting data through program observations, administration of guest surveys, and other methods
  • Assist in gathering information and creating content for interpretive resources, including but not limited to species fact sheets
  • Provide informal interpretation and assist with interpretive program delivery, such as storybook readings, interactive Conservation Carts, and engaging activities to enhance guest experiences and promote conservation
  • Support the Biofact Team by assisting with the maintenance of Zoo Atlanta’s biofact collection which contains over 1,000 items primarily comprised of biological materials like bones, fur, and feathers
  • Assist the Interpretive Programs team with various projects related to interpretive training, exhibit planning, and program implementation

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old and no longer in High School
  • Accepted applicants must clear background check and motor vehicle report
  • All Animal Area internships require a negative TB Test
  • Complete online application and submit all required paperwork
  • Participants must be eligible for work in the United States
  • Display an interest in developing career skills  
  • Ability to follow all Zoo Atlanta safety protocols and follow instructions from Zoo staff during emergency procedures
  • Follow all Zoo Atlanta policies and procedures

Required Skills:

The successful candidate must have:

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills    
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills  
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team
  • Strong time management and organizational skills 

Schedule

  • 40 hours per week maximum
  • Semester: 12 weeks maximum
  • Sunday-Thursday
  • Wednesdays required for trainings

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to repeatedly lift and/or push 45 lbs.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Must be able to spend 80% or more of the workday standing/walking
