Job Summary:

This position is focused on tenant organizing and leadership development within multifamily residential properties. Approximately 70% of the work is conducted on-site, engaging directly with tenants to build organizing capacity, support advocacy efforts, and strengthen tenant-led committees. The role also involves coordination with staff, partners, and coalitions to drive strategic campaigns for tenant rights and housing justice. The description of this position is articulated in the section outlining duties and responsibilities below, but questions and conversations about our history and framework are welcome and encouraged prior to working on application materials.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Some organizing experience, whether professionally or as an organization member. This might be labor, tenant organizing, community organizing, advocacy, or similar related work.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English is required.
  • Strong ability to work with word processing, spreadsheets, and applications like Canva, as well as the ability to learn contact management software, is required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to economic justice.
  • Strategic, practical thinking is required and should be communicated in application materials.
  • An ability to connect with people and be persuasive is paramount.
  • The ability to work under pressure and communicate effectively about needs regarding time off or other support is required.
  • Access to a reliable vehicle - a car stipend will be paid

Key Responsibilities:

  • Tenant Outreach & Leadership Development:
  • Conduct door-to-door outreach and one-on-one meetings with tenants to identify and develop Tenant Leaders (goal: minimum 5 meetings per week). Build relationships that foster leadership, committee growth, and campaign momentum.
  • Organizing Strategy & Site Planning:
  • Assist in charting and assessing organizing sites to inform strategic decisions, track progress, and evaluate campaign structure. Help maintain clear records of tenant engagement and committee development.
  • Committee Building & Meeting Facilitation:
  • Plan and conduct regular organizing committee meetings, progressively increasing tenant ownership of meeting agendas and facilitation roles.
  • Staff & Field Team Coordination:
  • Support the Organizing Manager in onboarding, training, and mentoring field organizers. Prepare site-specific strategy memos, facilitate weekly team check-ins, and pair new organizers with experienced staff for fieldwork.
  • Policy Advocacy & Coalition Work:
  • Participate in drafting and negotiating policy with coalition partners. Prepare tenants for legislative testimony and advocacy actions. Attend coalition meetings relevant to organizing efforts.
  • Administrative & Reporting Duties:
  • Track and report organizing metrics monthly (e.g., one-on-ones, doors knocked, committee members). Manage field expenses and submit receipts. Assist with grant reporting and internal documentation.
  • Education & Materials Development:
  • Create outreach materials on tenant rights and union activities, such as flyers and emails. Communicate policy in accessible language for renters.
  • Executive Board Support:
  • Collaborate with the Organizing Manager to facilitate the work of the Member Executive Board, which guides policy priorities and structural change initiatives.
  • Resource Referral:
  • Refer tenants to legal or service partners when necessary, without providing additional case management or navigation.

Benefits:

  • This position pays $60,000-$65,000 to start
  • Health insurance costs are provided up to $380 per month, reimbursing the cost of premiums purchased independently through the QSHERA program.
  • Like any organizing job, this position requires long and variable hours, including weekends and evenings. Currently, there is no cap on PTO. We expect organizers to take time off to compensate for the demands of our schedules during peak periods.
